Motor house at Snatchup Alley
Motor house at Snatchup Alley

Recent local history work has put little known Snatchup Alley – a formerly densely populated thoroughfare which led north from St Albans town centre towards Bernards Heath - onto the national map. The community there was displaced when the ancient cottages were demolished by the water company, who built a motor house and water storage tanks on the site late in the 19th century. Research and a leaflet have led to recognition of the lane, the installation of street nameplates, and its inclusion in the city’s street-cleaning regime. This promotion of local history won a national award. Leaflets are available from englishinfo.

An article on St Albans' European connections including 20th century twinning with Odense (Denmark), Worms (Germany), Nevers (France), Nyiregyhaza (Hungary) and Fano (Italy) The town twinning experience in Hertfordshire appeared in Herts Past & Present 3rd Series. No 8, Autumn 2006, pp 27-31.
